During the late 1800’s, the den Breejen family tradition of flower bulb growing and selling was born in Holland, under Mr. Edward Nieuwenhuis (grandfather of Edward Dick den Breejen). By the 1930’s the first Dutch bulbs were shipped to the United States by Edward Nieuwenhuis. Following World War II, Mr. Dick Nieuwenhuis (Uncle of E. Dick den Breejen) started the family business in the U.S. under the name Edward Nieuwenhuis Inc. at Sicomac Avenue, Wyckoff, New Jersey- as sole proprietor. In 1976 the business was transferred to Edward Dick, and Kathleen J. den Breejen. Once business expanded beyond the original facilities, it relocated from Sicomac Avenue in Wyckoff, to larger facilities at Prospect Reed and Harness in Prospect Park, NJ.

They remained at this location for 3 years before circumstances required another move in 1979 to Kinnelon, New Jersey. In 1983, after much confusion and numerous spelling errors, the owners decided to simplify the name. “Ed” from Edward and “nie” from Nieuwenhuis were combined to create the company name: Ednie Flower Bulb Inc. After many renovations and proving to be too small still, the company was relocated to their current location in Fredon, NJ.
